ABSTRACT

Cadmium and lead are toxic metal and poses a high environmental risk to animals and humans, alike. It is thus pertinent to search for medicinal plants in protecting against their toxicity. This study aims at investigating the ability of aqueous extract of Persea americana seeds (AS) in the detoxification of cadmium and lead in the liver of cadmium and lead-exposed Wistar rats. 25 male Wistar rats, divided into five groups of five each, were used in the experiment. Animals in Group I received distilled water as a control, Group II received a lead and cadmium mixture, Group III received lead aetate (30 mg/kg), cadmium chloride mixture (15 mg/kg), and zinc as standard (25 mg/kg), and Groups IV and V received 75 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg, respectively, of an ethanolic extract of avocado seed over the course of 28 days. Animals in Group I were weighed weekly. Following the administration phase, the animals were put to sleep with chloroform before being slaughtered humanely and having their livers taken out. ALP, AST, and ALT, as well as GPx, MDA, SOD, and CAT, as well as total protein, albumin, and total and direct bilirubin, are among the liver enzymes, blood, feces, and liver, respectively, that are subjected to heavy metal analysis. When compared to the lead and cadmium group and the control group, the ethanolic extract of Persea americana seed extract of 100 mg/kg exhibited a substantial reduction in the amount of lead and cadmium in the blood, feces, and kidney.
