AVAILABILITY OF TEACHERS AND LABORATORY FACILITIES FOR THE EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF CHEMISTRY EDUCATION IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN BENIN CITY IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE.

ABSTRACT

This study is to investigate the Availability of teachers and laboratory facilities for the effective teaching and learning of chemistry education in senior secondary schools in Benin city. A case study of Oredo Local Government Area of Edo state. Four research questions were raised in order to carry out this study. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was teachers from thirteen (13) government and seventy-five (75) private senior secondary schools in Oredo Local government Area of Edo state, Nigeria. The sample of the study was seventy (70) teachers randomly selected. The instruments were validated and to determine the instrument's reliability, five (5) teachers with similar academic standing to the sample were used in the pilot testing and a reliability score of 0.67 was obtained. Data was collected through questionnaire that were randomly distributed to five (5) schools in the Local Government Area. The method of analysis was by the use of mean, standard deviation and simple percentage. Based on the research, it was discovered that good laboratory facilities enhance the students’ ability to learn and assimilate effectively, availability of qualified chemistry teachers makes teaching and learning chemistry more effective. The study recommends that school administrators should implement functional and up-to-date laboratory facilities to meet the needs of the students, Government and Parents should collaborate with school management to advocate for policy changes that prioritize laboratory infrastructure and teacher availability in senior secondary school education, highlighting the potential improvements in learning outcomes and student performance.
