AVAILABILITY AND USE OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS IN THE TEACHING OF SOCIAL STUDIES IN BENIN METROPOLIS

ABSTRACT

This research understudy the "Availability and use of instructional materials in the teaching of social studies in Benin metropolis." The methodology used to investigate students' elective subject choices within the senior secondary school certificate examinations in Egor local government area, Edo state. A descriptive survey research design was employed due to the impracticality of including all junior secondary school teachers as subjects. A representative sample of 100 respondents, consisting of the same five Social Studies teachers, was selected for data collection. The questionnaire titled "The Availabilitv and Use of Instructional Materials in the Teaching of Social Studies" was designed with 15 items grouped into three sections: demographics, instructional material availability, and use frequency. The reliability coefficient, based on responses from 20 participants, was found to be 0.7. Three research questions were raised. The findings underscore the significant impact of the availability and proficient utilization of instructional materials on students' academic performance in Social Studies. Recommendations include enhancing material availability, providing teacher training, and diversifying resources to improve the teaching and learning of Social Studies in secondary schools. These insights can guide educational stakeholders in prioritizing the provision and usage of instructional materials to enhance education in the region. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the crucial role of instructional materials in teaching Social Studies in Benin metropolis secondary schools. These materials are fundamental educational tools widely employed by educators, providing a foundation for effective teaching strategies and enhanced educational experiences.
