ATTITUDES TOWARDS THE URHOBO LANGUAGE

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the attitudes towards Urhobo language among speakers in Delta State. The study used a survey research design and questionnaires were employed for the study; with a number of 100 respondents who comprised of adult residents of Asaba, Delta State. From the total copies of the questionnaire distributed, a response rate of 90% was achieved and used for analysis. Findings revealed that speakers use Urhobo language, the highest mean score is, “How often do you use the Urhobo language in your daily conversations with family members?” and “To what extent do you use the Urhobo language at cultural events?” (MD=3.56) respectively, while the lowest mean item was “When consuming media (newspapers) that is available in both Urhobo and English, how often do you choose the Urhobo content?” (MD=2.73). On the attitude of Urhobo speakers towards the language. The highest mean score is, “I consider the Urhobo language as an integral part of my identity” (MD=3.49); while the lowest mean item was “I find it comfortable to communicate in the Urhobo language with friends” (MD=3.29). On the different context of Urhobo usage, the highest mean score is, “I prefer to speak Urhobo when conversing with older family members” (MD=3.36); while the lowest mean item was “I use the Urhobo language in formal or professional settings” (MD=2.58). In conclusion, the study's findings underscore the importance of the Urhobo language in maintaining cultural identity, fostering community connections, and preserving traditional knowledge. Based on the findings, it was recommended that there is a need to collaborate with cultural organizations, educational institutions, and community leaders to develop and promote initiatives that celebrate Urhobo culture and traditions. This should emphasize the role of the language in cultural events and traditional ceremonies to reinforce its connection to cultural identity.
