ABSTRACT
The study investigated the attitudes of teachers towards the fundamental rights of secondary school students in Edo South Senatorial District of Edo State. Seven research questions were raised. One was answered while six were formulated into hypotheses and tested at 0.05 level of significance.
Thedesign of the study was descriptive survey. The population of the study comprised all 3000 teachers from public and private secondary schools in Edo south senatorial district of Edo State. The Simple random sampling techniques was used to select a sample of three hundred (300) secondary school teachers representing 10% for the study. The instrument that was used for this study was a structured questionnaire titled (ATTFROS) which was validated with a reliability coefficient of 0.72. The research question was analyzed using mean and standard deviation while hypotheses were tested using the independence T-test statistics and the one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significance.
The findings from the analysis of the study revealed that teachers had positive attitude towards the rights of students, there was significant difference between male and female teachers in their attitudes towards fundamental rights of students. It also showed that there was significant difference among teachers with different educational qualifications in their attitudes towards fundamental rights of students among others. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the educational institutions and relevant authorities should keep at it and not relent in teaching the legal aspect of education ( Education Law) in teachers’ training institutions as the knowledge acquired through the course have made the teachers to be more enlightened to have a positive attitude towards the rights of their students. Also, it was recommended that sensitization, workshops and seminars should be constantly organized for the female teachers to be more aware like their male counterparts among others.
