ATTITUDES OF SPECIAL EDUCATION ADMINISTRATORS TOWARDS THE USE OF PARAPROFFESIONALS IN TEACHING OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES IN METROPOLIS OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The study investigated Attitude of special education administrator towards the use of paraprofessionals in Teaching students with Disabilities, A case Study of some Special Schools in Benin Metropolis. Four research questions and three hypothesis guided this study. The study adopted Descriptive survey research design in which 40 special education administrators within 39 private and public special schools in Benin Metropolis, participated in the study. The research instrument used for data collections is titled Attitude of primary Special Education Administrators towards the use of paraprofessionals (PASEATUPS) The questionnaire was a 4-point Likert scale. The questionnaire consists of 15 items. The minimum and maximum scores are 15 and 60 respectively.

. The instrument used was validated by researcher’s supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Educational Evaluation and Counselling Psychology, the research was subjected to Cronbach alpha reliability which chosed a reliability coefficient of 0.706, which showed that instrument has high reliability. Data were Analyzed using frequency count, percentage mean and standard deviation, the Hypotheses were tested using independent sample t-test and One way Analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 0.5 level of significance. The findings showed that (64%) of the special education administrator have positive attitude towards the use of paraprofessionals in teaching children with disabilities. Also there was not significant difference in the attitude of paraprofessional based on their educational qualification, age and sex. The study recommended among others that Edo state Government should employ the services of paraprofessionals to assist special education teachers.
