Abstract

Feminism in the Nigerian society has elicited a lot of view from old and young alike. The meaning of the word feminism has been thwarted and confused as time went by. Social media has been of immense benefits in taking back the meaning of the word feminism and also educating the masses as to its true meaning. Twitter has a social media platform is a very effective tool to do this. This study sought to examine the attitude and perception of UNIBEN undergraduates towards twitter messages portraying feminism, using mass communication Students as a case study. The study is anchored on the Yale persuasion theory which basically explains how peoples’ attitudes are most likely to change in response to persuasive messages. A simple survey method was used for this research. The questionnaire was administered to a total of 90 respondents. From the information gathered from respondents, the findings of the study revealed that undergraduates in UNIBEN has positive attitudes towards twitter messages portraying feminism. Furthermore, it is revealed that majority of UNIBEN undergraduates are familiar with twitter messages portraying feminism and they engage with these messages. This research concluded that although they are well aware of the meaning of the concept feminism, they are yet to decide if feminism is as a result of westernization or not. The study therefore recommended that, Undergraduates should increase their engagement with twitter messages portraying feminism. They should at all times start discourse that aims to clarify what Feminism means and to eradicate the wrong ideas. They should take a decisive stand on twitter messages portraying feminism are a result of westernization
