ABSTRACT
The present study examined the language attitudes of secondary school students towards Ẹdo. The aim of the study was to find out the attitudes of these students toward Ẹdo. The data relied on for the study was through gotten through the use of questionnaires. The data collected were analyzed by the use of tables showing the students’ responses in frequencies and percentages. The theoretical framework employed was the language attitude theory. The data analysis revealed that the attitude toward Ẹdo is on the negative side and unless something is done the language might go into extinction. The study found among other things that the attitude towards Ẹdo is negative and that the home, the school, the society in general as well as the government had contributed their quota in the resultant negative attitudes. Furthermore the study recommended among other things that for these negative attitudes towards Ẹdo to change, parents must teach their children to not only speak Ẹdo but also to be proud of it and schools in Benin City must discontinue the treatment of Ẹdo as a vernacular punishable by the school laws.
