ATTITUDE OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TOWARDS THE STUDY OF SOCIAL STUDIES IN THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

ABSTRACT

This study examined the attitudes of undergraduate students toward the study of Social Studies education at the University of Benin. The research explored four key questions: Teaching method used in Social Studies classrooms, availability of resources in schools, economic factors influences students, peer influence affect student’s attitude and measures to improve attitudes. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with a sample size of 130 students selected through random sampling. The sample includes 20 students from 200level, 20 students from 300level and 20 students from 400level. Data were analyzed using frequency, mean, and standard deviation. Findings revealed that most students acknowledged the importance of Social Studies in promoting citizenship education, critical thinking, and societal problem-solving. However, a significant portion still viewed the subject as less critical compared to other courses. Some students reported that teaching methods lacked innovation, reducing their interest. Societal stereotypes about Social Studies as a less prestigious subject negatively influenced students' enthusiasm. The study contributes to the understanding of students attitudes and offers strategies for improving engagement and perception of social studies education in tertiary institutions.
