ABSTRACT
This study examined the attitude of pre-school children towards learning in public and private schools in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo state. Three research questions were raised as guide for the study. The study adopted the survey research design and the population of the study consisted of all pre-school teachers in public and private schools in Oredo Local Government Area in Edo state. Related literature to the topic was reviewed. The instrument of data collection was a questionnaire titled ‘Attitude of pre-school children towards learning in public and private schools in Oredo Local Government Area’. The data collected was analysed using mean and standard deviation. The findings revealed that pre-school children commonly exhibit a favourable attitude towards learning. They demonstrate eagerness and curiosity for acquiring new knowledge, find enjoyment in the learning process, display enthusiasm for school, and do not perceive learning as challenging. It was also discovered that the educational level, family structure, encouragement by parents and teachers, the teaching method of teachers, and availability of play materials were significant factors affecting the attitude of pre-school children toward learning. The study also revealed that the attitude of pre-school children can be improved by meeting their basic needs, actively listening to and responding to them, creating a conducive learning environment for them, providing play facilities and incorporating the use of technology and multimedia resources while teaching. Based on the findings, it was therefore recommended that teachers, parents and caregivers should leverage on the positive attitude of pre-school children by providing them with positive reinforcement in other to set them up for a life time of learning and achievement. It was also recommended that parents should make an effort to fulfil the fundamental necessities of their children such as nourishment, clothing, safety, self-confidence, etc before sending them to school. Also, parents should maintain a continuous engagement in their children’s education, staying updated on their subjects and learning methods. Pre-schools should allocate sufficient time and physical area for play. The learning environment should be conducive and suited to the needs of children. Pre-school teachers should incorporate the use of technology and multimedia resources to enhance hands-on-learning experiences.
