ABSTRACT

This study explores the attributes and attitudes of female Mass Communication students at Benson Idahosa University (BIU), Benin City, towards pursuing journalism as a career. As the media industry continues to evolve, understanding the factors that influence career decisions among female students is crucial for fostering gender diversity within the field. The research employs a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data on the perspectives of female students. Key areas of focus include the influence of societal norms, perceived career challenges, role models, and the students' personal interest in journalism. The study also examines how the university environment and curriculum shape these students' attitudes towards journalism. Findings reveal that while many female students show a strong interest in journalism, several barriers, such as concerns about work-life balance, safety in the field, and gender stereotypes, impact their career choices. The research highlights the need for targeted mentorship programs and supportive policies within academic institutions to encourage more female students to consider journalism as a viable and fulfilling career path. This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on gender representation in the media industry and offers recommendations for educators and policymakers to better support female students in their career aspirations within journalism.
