Abstract

The study investigated the association between the physical fitness status of University of Benin security staff and their job performance. Four research questions were raised to guide the study and two hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 alpha level The security staff members were examined to understand their levels of physical fitness, including speed, muscular strength, and BMI. The research aimed to explore the relationship between physical fitness and job performance, the awareness of physical fitness programs among the staff, differences in fitness levels based on gender, and overall fitness status, with a goal of enhancing job performance and well-being

The population of the study consisted of 513 security staff in University of Benin, while a sample size total of  138  security staff were examined. A comprehensive data of the number of security staff in the university department was used to select all the respondents to represent the study. Additionally a structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents. The instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science. The data elicited from the respondents were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. Hypotheses were tested with paired sample t-test analysis, using a stratified random sampling technique.

The study indicates that while the security staff generally felt their fitness levels were adequate, there were challenges in maintaining these levels. There was a positive correlation between physical fitness and job performance. The study also found a high awareness of the importance of physical fitness programs among the security staff. Gender differences were noted, with male staff typically showing higher fitness levels, though this did not significantly impact job performance. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that integrating the stamina-building exercises and trainings, support programs, implementing regular workshop, seminars or health campaigns and evaluating job performance should be applied for impeccable execution of expected duties. The research conducted at the University of Benin sheds light on the physical fitness status and job performance of the security staff. In conclusion, the findings reveal that while security personnel generally perceive their physical fitness levels as adequate for their duties, there is room for improvement in maintaining these level. The results highlight the need for inclusive fitness initiatives and underscore the importance of promoting physical fitness awareness to optimize job performance and overall well-being of security staff in the University of Benin.
