ABSTRACT
This work is a study of assimilation processes in Nigerian Pidgin with the Brekete Family Online Radio and Television Program as a case study. Assimilation is a sound change in which some phonemes (typically consonants or vowels) change to become more similar to other nearby sounds. In some cases, assimilation causes the sound spoken to differ from the normal pronunciation in isolation. The major processes of assimilation are consonant, vowel, coalescent, and nasalization. Many researchers have written more on other types and processes of assimilation in other languages and aspects but have not really recognized assimilation in Nigerian Pidgin, hence, this research. This study adopts Natural Phonology theory (NP) as its theoretical background, and qualitative analysis in analyzing the data. This research is of a great significance because its contribution in the study of assimilation is channeled into understanding the Nigerian Pidgin and the processes that form its foundational use.
