ASSESSMENT ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING SERVICES IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

ABSTRACT

This study aims at assessing the implementation of guidance and counselling services in public Secondary Schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area. Three research questions were raised to guide the study, and three hypotheses were tested. The design for this study is the descriptive survey design. The sample consisted of hundred (100) respondents randomly selected from five (5) public mixed Senior Secondary Schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area in Edo State. Questionnaires were used for the collection of data from hundred (100) respondents who were Senior Secondary School Students. The cronbach alpha statistics method was adopted in testing the reliability of the instrument after which the research instruments were administered by the researcher herself. The data obtained were analyzed using simple percentage and frequency count. Findings revealed that students were not fully aware of the guidance and counselling services available to them, it was also revealed that guidance and counselling services are not fully available in Secondary Schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area. Also, heavy workload, inadequate time, and lack of facilities were revealed to be some of the challenges affecting the implementation of guidance and counselling in public Secondary Schools. Based on the findings, it was recommended that awareness and sensitization programmes should be held at intervals to educate both students, parents and society on the importance of guidance and counselling services. Also, it was recommended that government should make deliberate efforts to provide the necessary equipment and facilities for the smooth running of the guidance and counselling services in public Secondary Schools.
