Abstract
The study examined the writing strategies used by senior secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. It also sought to find information on students’ knowledge of writing strategies, how they were being implemented in writing and also to what extent students use the strategies of writing during the process of writing.
The population of this study consists of all secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo state. The sample size of this study comprises of 80 Senior Secondary School students randomly selected from five randomly selected secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The research instrument for this study was a structured questionnaire titled 'Assessment of Writing Strategies Used by Senior Secondary School Students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State'. The data obtained from the study were analyzed using mean and standard deviation.
The findings from the research revealed that students seldom use the writing strategies in its proper format- pre-writing, while-writing, and post-writing. It also revealed that majority of the population made use of the post-writing strategies during writing which is not cogent enough to develop one's writing skills. Based on this findings, it is recommended that educators should ensure that students be familiar with the process of writing and its strategies in order to achieve proper writing passages and effective communication during writing.
