ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to assess the rate of wood selection and utilization efficiency by small scale furniture industries in Benin City. The objective of this study was identify the common tree species used in furniture making, the various lumber dimensions used in furniture making, the actual volume of wood used in furniture making and the waste management practice by small scale furniture industries .30% sampling intensity was applied to the 32 wards in the Local Government Area and 6 wards were selected, 118 respondents were randomly selected for the study. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and interview of the respondents. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage summarized into tables and charts and inferential statistics to test the variables. The results indicate that 99% of the respondents were male, while 1% were female it shows Mansonia altissima and Gmelina arborea accounted for (100%) as the most commonly used wood species. It also shows that most commonly used dimension is 1’’x12’’x18’(100%).the result also show that wood shavings (48%), off cuts (33%), sawdust (19%) are the most common wood wastes generated by the furniture makers in Benin City.
