ABSTRACT

The study evaluated the tocolytic effect of Anthocleista Djalonesis methanolleaf extract on uterine contractility. Three (3) mature virgin Albino mice were used for the in-vitro uterine contractility assay. A. djanolenesis extract was tested on spontaneous, high KCl and oxytocin-induced uterine contractions on each of the non-pregnant mice used for the study. At the end of the study the uterus was isolated and uterine segment were mounted in organ baths (10mls) which contained aerated Ringer Locke’s or HEPES Buffer PSS (physiological salt solution) at (370c) and the differential force (amplitude) and frequency were recorded via an isomeric force transducer.  The results show that A. djanolenesis methanol leaf extract inhibited spontaneous, high KCL and oxytocin-induced contraction in non-pregnant mice uterus in a dose dependent manner. This may be as a result of active compounds detected in the extract with reported medicinal properties known to activate the IP3 receptor or through the blockade of ryanodine receptors.
