ABSTRACT

Many local construction project in Nigeria do not make use of feasibility study one reason being the cost of carrying out a feasibility study, feasibility can be very helpful for guiding decision making process as they can provide neutral, third party professional analysis including cost benefit analysis, alternative options and verification. This study was carried out to Assess the use of feasibility studies in building construction project in Edo State, through identification of characteristics of project where feasibility studies is carried out, factors determining the use of feasibility studies and the project portfolios of a feasibility study; questionnaires were distributed to construction firms (contractor and consultant) in Edo Sate. A total number of 171 questionnaires were administered but a total of 100 were retrieved (58%), the response received was analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel through the method of Relative Importance Index (RII). The result obtained from the analysis showed among the different characteristics of projects for facility use, Multiple dwelling unit ranked 1^st amongst the different characteristics of projects for the projects classified according to finance medium Donor project ranked 1^st among client financed and corporate finance project, while for project classified according to their size large project (budget over 1 billion naira) ranked first in how frequent feasibility studies is carried out compared to small and medium project, amongst factor determining the use of feasibility study identifying financial and technical limits was ranked first amongst others, while for the portfolios covered by a typical feasibility studies Technology construction and Technical Capacity was ranked first by the respondent amongst others.
