ABSTRACT

The study surveyed the role of mass media in national security among residents of Edo State. The study was employed as a result of the problem of insecurity in Edo State such as kidnapping, robbery, killings etc. Using the survey design, a 13 -item questionnaire was distributed to 400 respondents who were selected based on their background knowledge of the study. The research work was hinged on the social responsibility theory. The data obtained were presented and analyzed with the aid of frequency tables, simple percentage. The study found out that, the extent to which the media contribute on security matters is to a high extent. The mass media is indeed plays a major in national security. Therefore, the study concludes that the media are expected to feed the public with information capable of promoting peace and development. Government is after national security of public interest and their part to hear positive information or news favourable to them who are expected to promote harmony and safety of their environment.
