ASSESSMENT OF THE PRODUCTIVITY IMPROVEMENT PRACTICES OF CONSTRUCTION CRAFTSMEN IN EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The construction industry plays a vital role in increasing and improving the gross domestic product of developing countries. Nigeria being a developing country, the construction industry is highly labour intensive. Assessment of the productivity improvement practices of construction craftsmen in Edo State’s aim is at improving the productivity practices of construction worker in Edo State with the view of improving time performance of construction workers in Edo State.  For the purpose of this study, the data collection instrument used was structured questionnaire making use of the 5-point Likert scale. Sample size of 54 was chosen from population frame of 60 construction firms was adopted for the study. The study found out among other things that there should be periodic increase in wages of artisans and craftsmen, pension, timeliness of remuneration, profit sharing, provision of incentives and wages paid being proportional to work done. To this end, it  is has been proven beyond doubt from this study that any thing done by the employers to directly or indirectly increase workers earning can actually improve the workers productivity  Craftsmen are the major employee of the construction industry, since most of the work in the construction industry including operating machines are done by humans(workers),it is therefore necessary to  make the above productivity improvement practices available for site workers so as to enable workers always put in their best in site.
