ABSTRACT

Evaluating the impact of leachate from dumpsites on groundwater quality is crucial, especially since groundwater serves as a primary drinking water source for many communities. Poor waste management in Nigerian cities, including the presence of a dumpsite in Otofure community, Benin City, poses significant environmental risks, affecting air and groundwater quality. This study seeks to investigate the effects of the dumpsite on local groundwater quality. The study was conducted in Otofure community, Oluku, Benin City, where a dumpsite spanning 29.2m2 contains a mix of metallic, organic, and non-biodegradable waste. Using GPS coordinates (060 27'46.3"N 050 36'00.2"E), six water samples were collected from the dumpsite's leachate, nearby wells and boreholes, and a control sample from a distant area. The samples were then analyzed at the Civil Engineering department's water laboratory for various parameters, including pH, temperature, and bacterial content, in accordance with WHO guidelines for drinking water quality. Results revealed that water samples near the dumpsite had higher coliform bacteria levels (2x103 cfu), making them unsuitable for drinking or domestic use. However, the value obtained from the control location was lower (0x103 cfu). All other parameters were within limit stipulated by WHO. It was concluded that the groundwater quality near the dumpsite was adversely affected. The study highlights the urgent need to address solid waste management and its impact on water resources. It recommends against using wells in the area for drinking and domestic purposes due to contamination risks. Ensuring proper waste disposal and safeguarding water sources are crucial for the community's health and well-being. Further research and measures are necessary to mitigate the environmental consequences of dumpsites
