ABSTRACT
This study assessed the effects of flooding on the livelihood of rural households in Sagbama LGA, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to; describe the socio-economic characteristics of the rural households in the study area, identify the livelihood activities of the rural households, identify the causes of flooding, assess the effects of flooding on the livelihood of rural households and assess the coping strategies of flooding of rural households. A two stage sampling technique was employed in this study. Data for this study were obtained from both primary and secondary sources. Primary data were obtained through the use of structured questionnaire administered through interview schedule to Ninety three (93) randomly selected respondents from the study area. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square and Pearson product moment correlation. Results from the descriptive statistic showed that majority (57.0%) of the respondents was male, and majority (62.4%) was married. The mean age, mean household size and mean average monthly income were 44.5years, 4.2 members and N46,650.4 respectively. The Ijaws were the dominant tribe with 53.8%. Majority (98.9%) the respondents were educated and about 39.8% belonged to a cooperative or social group. Respondents engaged in several agricultural and nonagricultural livelihoods. Furthermore, the result showed that 58.7% of the respondents the major causes flooding in the area were overflow of water body over its bank, poor environmental planning, topography and dam failure with means above the mean benchmark of 3.0. Damage of crop was the major effect of flooding to agricultural assets in the area. Disruption of access to health facilities and services was the major impact of flooding to health assets. Disruption of business was the major impact of flooding to economic assets.
