ASSESSMENT OF THE CHALLENGES FACING SECONDARY SCHOOL ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

This study was designed to assess the challenges facing secondary school English language and literature students' in Onitsha South Local Government Area of Anambra State. In order to achieve this purpose, five research questions were raised to guide the study. Questionnaires were administer to One hundred students from five different secondary school in Onitsha South Local Government Area. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The simple random sampling technique was used, Also the test-retest reliability was used. The simple percentage was used in the presentation of data. Then the result from the presentation showed that inadequate Instructional materials , family background, the teacher, students' attitude, the environment and mother tongue facilitate to the challenges facing secondary school English language and literature students. Based on the findings of this work, it was recommended that government should employ qualified teachers, provide finance and infrastructural amenities to schools. Then, teachers should use instructional materials effectively and perfect proficiency to enable positive effects on students academic performances. Also, endeavor to motivate students and stop the use of mother tongue while interacting with students. Parents should contribute their quota by ensuring that provisions are made, the students as well as encouraging them to read. More so, students should take their studies seriously, avoid procrastination and bad friends. Lastiy, school managers should provide a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning.
