ABSTRACT
The investigation on the assessment of the awareness of safety measurement for prevention of laboratory accidents among biology undergraduate students in university of Benin, Edo State, Six (6) research questions served as it's guidelines, and it used a descriptive survey study design. It sought to find out Are the laboratories safe enough to be used by students? Are all equipment up to the necessary standards in respect to health and risk to health? Is the adequate arrangement for storage, maintenance cleaning, renewal and are frequent inspections conducted? What emergency procedures have been formulated to address incidents like spillage of toxic, what is the knowledge of laboratory hazard symbols and fire safety precautions possessed by undergraduates? what is the source of the student knowledge of laboratory safety practices and fire safety. The study employed a sample of Biology students in university of Benin, Edo State and a total of (150) respondents which were collected from two public schools and two private schools. The researcher developed questionnaire titled Questionnaire on "assessment of the awareness of safety measurement for prevention of laboratory accidents among biology undergraduate students" was used as the data collection tool. There are thirty (30) items on the questionnaire. To analyze the data collected, descriptive statistics such as mean, Simple percentage and frequency were used. The study find out that students can safely use the University of Benin laboratory, the level of knowledge of laboratory hazard symbols and fire safety precautions among undergraduates can vary depending on factors such as the educational institution, Ensuring adequate arrangements for storage, maintenance, cleaning, and renewal is crucial for maintaining a safe and functional environment such as there is sink where people can wash their hands after finishing a task or before leaving the laboratory, Adequate arrangement of Laboratory equipment is save for use and that a well maintained lab equipment provide accurate result. It was suggested that Biology department to organize seminars, workshops, conferences, and add a course like Laboratory Organization and Management to their curriculum in order to familiarize their science students with the proper laboratory safety rules, skills, and attitude, and to improve on their Level of Laboratory Safety Awareness and Practices at university of Benin, Comparable research can be carried out in several schools using various samples, Paying particular emphasis to the practical side of laboratory procedures and first aid knowledge, which should be learned and assessed via lecture instruction and experimentation.
