ABSTRACT

The entire efforts of this study focused on students’ attitude and self-efficacy towards learning of English Language in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. In order to attain the objectives of the study, five research questions were raised to guide the study.

Descriptive survey research design was adopted by the study.  The research design used for this study is the survey research design.The population of the study is made up of Junior Secondary Schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample of the population is a total number of one hundred and sixty (160) from four Junior secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Forty students were randomly selected from each school, making a total of one hundred and sixty (160) student. The instrument for the study was the questionnaire designed by the researcher herself. The questionnaire which was titled “Students’ Attitude and Self-Efficacy Towards Learning of English Language in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State” was made up of two sections: (Section A and B). Section A focused on the demographic information of respondents, while section B was designed to cover the Five (5) research questions raised to guide the study.

Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended amongst others: it is crucial to employ more interactive and engaging instructional strategies. The positive attitude of students towards self-efficacy in English should be mastered and sustained by students. Interacting and engaging English language activities in the classroom seems positive as students get to enjoy the company of the teacher rather than when they’re alive. Also, the need of tutoring students should be found among the teachers as they have the major work to do on the student.
