ABSTRACT
This study presents an overview of haematological parameters and factors affecting their values. Blood act as a pathological reflector of the status of the exposed animals to toxicants and other conditions. The research was carried out at the rabbit experimental unit at the University of Benin Farm Project, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. Eighteen mixed breed (Chinchilla), 5 to 6 weeks of age were randomly assigned using the Completely Randomized Design (CRD) into three treatment groups and subdivided into three replicates of two rabbits each. Treatment one was the control and was not administered the extract, while treatments two and three were administered 1.5ml and 3.0ml of Ginger lily pure stem extracts. Data collected were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 0.05% level of significance [using General Linear Model (GLM) procedure of SAS system, 2004] and significant means were separated using the Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test. The results showed that the haemoglobin, MCHC and MCV values obtained in this present experiment were within the recommended range reported for healthy rabbits. Hence, the administration of Ginger lily pure stem juice extract could be adopted in rabbit production.
