ASSESSMENT OF SOME HAEMATOLOGICAL, OXIDATIVE STRESS AND INFLAMMATORY PARAMETERS

ABSTRACT

Cassava (Manihot esculenta) is one of the most important calorie-producing crops in the tropics. Cassava (Manihot esculenta) is a dicotyledonous plant belonging to the family Euphorbiaceae. Cassava (Manihot esculenta) is the only domesticated species of the genus originating from the western Amazonian Rim and was first cultivated by Amerindian Indians.The medicinal values of the plant have been explored by different researchers; its antioxidant, antidiarrheal, anthelmintic, antimicrobial, antihemorrhagic, antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties have also been reported. This study was therefore designed to investigate the effect of the administration of various concentrations of Cassava tuber infused feed formulation on Iron profile, some haematological, oxidative and inflammatory parameters in albino Wistar rats. A total of 50 Albino Wistar rats were selected into five groups. Each group were subdivided into 2 (Males and females), consisting of five (5) animals each. The groups were 40% cassava tubers,20% casava tubers,10% cassava tuber, daidzein (25mg) and control group. FBC was analyzed using autoanalyzer. Iron was analyzed in colorimetric method while IL-2, IL-6, IL-8,CAT, SOD and MDA were analyzed using ELISA. The experiment’s findings revealed that serum iron was significantly higher in males rates fed with cassava (4905±804.7) when compared to control(163±53.16),female rats also showed a significant increase in serum iron (1069±122.1) when compared to control(590.1±156.3). UIBC in female rats was significantly lower in rats fed with 40% cassava feed formulation (117.9±26.32) when compared to control (146.7±55.74).TIBC in both male and female rats showed a marked increase in those administered cassava tuber(4413±793.7;1222±119.2)when compared to control(312.2±68.27; 785.6±139.8). Total WBC count in cassava tuber fed female rat was lower(8.6±0.47)than the control(9.1±2.05).Catalase in male and female rats showed significant decrease in 40% cassava tuber(17.48±1.365,20.87±1.682)when compared to control (26.59±4.266,41.65±0.87).SOD in male and female rats was significantly higher in 40%cassava tuber (58.26±2.834,31.73±2.603) when compared to control (41.24±3.584,34.29±2.022). MDA was significantly lower(p value)in female rats fed with 40% cassava tuber (3257±288.7) when compared to control (4276±261.3).Interleukin2 in male rats fed with 40% cassava showed a significantly lower (23.67±1.122)when compared to the control(30.71±1.654) while it was significantly higher (30.75±2.89) in female rats when compared to control(26.04±3.76).In conclusion, the result of this study shows that Manihot esculenta tuber have considerable impact on the iron profile and oxidative stress markers of adult albino Wistar rats. However, their effects on inflammatory and hematological parameter are less significant.
