ABSTRACT

This study examined secondary school teachers’ attitude towards the use of child-centered method in teaching Biology. In order to achieve the intended objectives of the study, four research questions were raised. The descriptive survey research design was employed for the study. The population of the study was made up of all senior secondary school students in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo state. Fifty students were randomly drawn from five schools in Ovia North-East LGA of Edo state. A questionnaire was used for data collection. The data collected from the questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistics such of frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation.

The findings showed that Biology teachers have positive attitude towards the use of child-centered methods in their instructional practices. The gender of the teacher cannot influence the effectiveness of child-centered teaching methods in biology education, teachers with specialized training in child-centered methods are better equipped to excel in biology education and years of teaching experience influences child-centered methods in biology education. The following recommendations amongst others were made; Given that teachers with specialized training in child-centered methods demonstrated better performance in biology education, it is recommended that educational institutions and authorities invest in professional development programs for biology teachers. These programs should focus on equipping teachers with the necessary knowledge and skills to implement child-centered teaching methods effectively.
