ABSTRACT

Utilization of poultry litter as manure has been a common practice for a very long time. Poultry manure is rich organic manure as solid and liquid excreta are excreted together resulting in no urine loss. Poultry manure contains nutrient elements that can support crop production and enhance the physical and chemical properties of the soil. The aim of this study was to evaluate the rhizobacterial activity of plant growth promoting bacteria from poultry droppings. In this study, eight (8) samples which were collected from different poultry farms were analyzed for the bacteria present and screened for their rhizobacterial potential. The mean heterotrophic count of the poultry droppings ranged from 1.69×106 to 10.1×10 6 cfu/ml. The results obtained revealed that the poultry droppings harboured various bacteria isolates which include Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas syringae, Bacillus polymyxa and Salmonella sp. The microbial assessment of the poultry droppings showed the presence of rhizobacterial species. Rhizobacterial species which are found under the Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) exert different beneficial effects to plant growth, which include phosphate solubilization, Nitrogen fixation, ammonia production, and Indole-3- Acetic Acid production. All the isolates except Salmonella sp. showed positive results for the aforementioned screening test carried out for the rhizobacterial potential of the poultry droppings. The occurrence of these microorganisms from the poultry droppings showed that waste from poultry can be used effectively as manure to aid plant growth due to the presence of rhizobacterial species thereby, maximizing the use of poultry droppings in the environment.
