ASSESSMENT OF POOR DRAINAGE SYSTEMS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA IN EDO STATE: A CASE STUDY OF WARD TEN (10)

ABSTRACT

This study focused on the Assessment of Poor Drainage Systems in Oredo Local Government Area in Edo State: A case study of Ward 10. Four research questions were raised to guide the study, for the purpose of understanding how knowledgeable the occupants were towards poor drainage systems and the impacts it has on them as well as the environment. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study drawn from Ward 10 Local Government Area in Oredo was 57,635 and a sample size of 100 respondents was used for the study. The reliability of the instrument was established using the splithalf method, convenience sampling technique was used to select respondents for the study. The questionnaire was given to the project supervisor and two other lecturers in the Department of Health, Safety and Environmental Education. The instrument was administered by the researcher after careful explanation to the respondents and retrieved immediately. After the collation of the instrument the data was analyzed using frequency and percentage, it was revealed that majority of occupants and residents are knowledgeable and aware of the devastating impacts poor drainage systems has on the environment. It was further revealed from the findings that majority of responents have proper knowledge of the causes of poor drainage systems. It is recommended that implementing a comprehensive maintenance program for drainage systems is crucial to ensuring optimal functionality, it is also recommended that promoting awareness and educating the community about the importance of proper drainage systems can have a significant impact.
