ABSTRACT

This study, anchored on the audience assessment of 'Politics Today' development programme aired on ITV/Radio in Edo State. This study was important due to the fact that development programmes are meant to mobilize the masses for social change which is seen as the main focus of every development Programme aired through any broadcast medium. However the effectiveness of these development programmes on citizens seems to be very slow. This has raised questions as to what may be the reasons why development programmes have a low impact and influence on the society. It is therefore against this backdrop that this study adopted the survey design with the aid of a 9-item questionnaire, examined the audience assessment of the development Programme 'Politics Today' aired on ITV/Radio in  Edo State, the audience awareness and assessment of the development Programme and the hinderances faced by audience in getting their contributions aired through development programme. Enhanced by the Principles of Social Responsibility Theory and Development Media Theory, the study adopted the proportionate sampling technique to select to select 300 respondents which represented all local government areas in Edo State. The findings of this study revealed that 'Politics Today' is a slow development programme. In addition, this study showed that the programme promotes development. Findings also revealed that network failure is a hinderance faced by audience in getting their contributions aired. Other hinderances faced by audience is power supply, low coverage, lack of radio facilities. Hence this study concluded that 'Politics Today' development programme is a slow development programme and network failure being a major hinderance faced by audience in Edo. Thus this study recommended that in order to satisfy the needs of the audience, media organisation should work on network failure so as to prevent the disruption of important development programme aired. Producers of the programme should strive more to advocate for the development of the citizens both in rural and urban areas. Also media organisations should work on the challenge of low coverage so that audience can participate and benefit from the development Programme aired. It is evident also to note that 'Politics Today'development programme is living up to it's expectations by employing democratic participation between the station and the audience.
