ASSESSMENT OF PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF OWAN RIVER AND WATER QUALITY INDEX

ABSTRACT

The present study was carried out in three stations to assess the physical chemical parameters and the water quality of Owan River. In this study, physico-chemical parameters were analysed using standard procedures. Hydrogen ion (pH) ranged between 6.50 to 6.65, dissolved oxygen (DO) (mg/l) ranged from 1.25mg/L to 2.28mg/L, conductivity (µS/cm) 74uS/cm to 77uS/cm, turbidity (NTU) ranged from 22.50NTU to 39.50NTU, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) 0.6- 2.70mg/l, nitrate ranging from 2.81mg/L to 8.13 mg/L, sulphate range of 14.50mg/L to hhhkkk15mg/L, phosphate (mg/l) range of 0.39mg/L to 0.56mg/L, hardness (TH) 31-40mg/l, calcium 6.02-7.22mg/l, magnesium 4.86-6.57mg/l, alkalinity 28-31mg/l, and chloride range from 10.58mg/L to 24.17mg/L). The Water Quality Index (WQI) values of Owan River ranged from 838.6727419, 411.1256919, 411.3544618 in station 1, 2 and 3 respectively with highest WQI value observed in the station 1. The mean Dissolved Oxygen and Biological Oxygen Demand obtained indicate the water is rated an unsuitable water quality for drinking. The quality of Owan River at station 1 showed an increase which could be an increase in the rate of anthropogenic activities around that area. Owan River was assessed as not fit for human consumption without proper treatment. However, it can be used for other activities, such as washing, bathing e.tcs. Water quality index (WQI) is an important tool in the assessment and management of water resources.
