ABSTRACT
This study assessed the perceived factors influencing student’s choice of vocational and technical education in Nigerian tertiary institution. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised to guide the study. The descriptive survey research design was selected for this study. The population of the study consist of two hundred and seventeen (217) members in 400Level in the Department of Vocational and Technical Education, University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State. 140 respondents were selected using Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling Technique and questionnaire was administered to them. The instrument was validated by three experts from the Department of Vocational and Technical Education. The reliability was done using the test-retest method. The data collected was analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and a reliability co-efficient of 0.85 was obtained.The data collected was analysed using mean and standard deviation. A mean value of 2.50 was used as a decision point. Mean score above 2.50 being the criterion level/benchmark were interpreted as 'high extent' while mean score below 2.50 were interpreted as 'low extent'. The findings of this study reveal that personal interest, parent and the society to a high extent influence students choice of vocational and technical education while peer group to a low extent influence students choice of vocational and technical education in Nigerian tertiary institution. The following recommendations were made based on these findings: Career guidance programs in schools should involve parents and guidance to align their expectations with student’s interests and strengths and also to educate them on the benefits and opportunities within vocational and technical education. Schools should offer programs that allow students to explore their personal interests in various vocational and technical fields. Creation of awareness campaigns that highlight the value and success stories of vocational and technical education should be incorporated. Stake holders in education should show more interest in the area of Technical and Vocational Education with emphasis on student’s course selection.
