ABSTRACT
This study explores the assessment of materials and teaching aids used by teachers in the implementation of government curriculum in Ovia North-East local government area of Edo state. The purpose of the study is to examine and evaluate the effectiveness suitability and impact of materials on teaching and learning outcomes in secondary school in Ovia North-East local government area. The study sought to examine the current situation of material assessment and implementation in secondary schools in Ovia North-East local government area. Research questions were raised to guide the study.
The descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study in order to collect data for the study. The research instrument employed was the questionnaire titled “Questionnaire on the assessment of materials and teaching aids used by teachers in the implementation of government curriculum in secondary schools in Ovia North-East local government area of Edo state (AMTTIGC)”. The study’s population contains Three hundred and thirty (330) teachers in one hundred and seventy four 174 schools in Ovia North-East local government area. The study’s sample was one hundred and fifty (150) teachers from five (5) different secondary schools. The following are salient findings;
Based on the respondents’ responses, it was found that teachers assess the effectiveness and suitability of materials by employing by making sure they align with curriculum standards.
It was also found that different learning styles of students, recommendations and feedback from colleagues, teachers preferred teaching methods are factors that influence teachers' selection and utilization of materials.
The result of the analysis conducted also revealed that outdated materials can be a weakness of materials which can hinder curriculum implementation process.
It also revealed that teachers can modify materials to meet the diverse learning needs of students by focusing on students’ interests and varied readiness levels.
The study also revealed some strategies that can be used to enhance the assessment and selection of materials; they include; ensuring that materials align closely with goals and objectives outlined in the government curriculum, conducting a needs assessment, involvement of teachers, curriculum experts, administrators and even students in the selection process to gather diverse perspectives and expertise and assessing the content quality.
Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made;
Teachers must always ensure that materials align with the specific curriculum standards and learning objectives, they should thoroughly review the content of the materials, gather feedback from the students and regularly assess the ongoing effectiveness of the materials.
Teachers should always select materials that can be easily adapted or customized to suit the specific needs of their classroom, consider the needs and learning styles of students, gather feedback and recommendations from colleagues, educational experts when selecting materials, consider instructional methods when selecting materials.
