ABSTRACT
This study investigates labor mobility among female quantity surveyors in the construction industry, focusing on the South-South region of Nigeria. In a field predominantly characterized by a male-dominated culture, women in construction often face limited career opportunities. The research collected data from 114 female quantity surveyors in states such as Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, Delta, Edo, and Rivers. Data was gathered through structured questionnaires, resulting in a response rate of 74.1%. Key findings indicate that a significant number of female quantity surveyors opt for careers in civil service or consulting firms due to the perceived advantages of flexibility and reduced stress. The study also highlights drivers and barriers to labor mobility, with flexible working arrangements, industry image, and workplace culture emerging as key drivers, while inadequate job security, recruitment practices, and gender discrimination serve as significant barriers. The benefits of labor mobility include professional development, gender equality, and job security. The research underscores the importance of creating an inclusive environment that supports labor mobility to advance the careers of female quantity surveyors and promote diversity within the construction industry. Recommendations encompass implementing flexible work policies, enhancing the industry's image, fostering supportive work cultures, eliminating gender discrimination, and improving recruitment practices. Future research opportunities include long-term career impact assessments and cross-regional or international comparative studies.
