ASSESSMENT OF KNOWLEDGE OF HYDROPONIC AGRICULTURE AMONG AGRICULTURAL PROFESSIONALS IN EDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Hydroponics has the potential to become a leading contributor to sustainable food production in the coming years. Hence, this study assessed agricultural professionals’, knowledge of hydroponic agriculture. Specifically, the study described the personal characteristics of agricultural professionals in the study area, examined the level of awareness and access of information on new innovative agricultural practices, determined the extent of knowledge of hydroponic agriculture, ascertained the perception on the benefits of hydroponic agriculture and identified the constraints to the practice of hydroponic agriculture. A two-stage sampling procedure was adopted to first, purposively select the agricultural institutions and secondly, randomly select 50% of the agricultural professionals from their respective institutions. Data were collected from 152 respondents with the aid of questionnaire and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings showed that most of the agricultural professionals were male (55.9%), 76.3% were married and average working experience was approximately 13 years.
