ABSTRACT
Background and Aim: The practice of diagnosis and prescribing medicine, is the most important skill required by any doctor in the colleges, hospitals or any clinical practice. Prescribing is the intervention that has the greatest influence on patients’ health, requiring complex series of sub-competences like making a diagnosis, setting a therapeutic goal, choosing the approach, choosing the best drug, route and frequency monitoring drug effects and lastly, review the prescription. The aim of this project research is to assess the knowledge and practices of clinical undergraduate dental students regarding the prescription of antibiotics and analgesic to patients. Methods: Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaires were distributed to clinical undergraduate dental students who made the study participants at the antenatal clinic. The purpose of the questionnaire was explained by the principle investigator and its anonymous nature was emphasized. The data were analyzed using the statistical package for the social sciences for windows (Version 25, Chicago, USA) statistical software package. Results: Forty eight (48) participants were included in the study. The age of the participants varied from 20 to 25 years with mean age of 24.58 + 3 years. Most of the participants were male. Yoruba ethnic group formed the bulk percent of the respondents. Prescription among these participants was found less adequate. Conclusion: The study provides a baseline of the knowledge, attitude, and behavior regarding antibiotics prescriptions among the undergraduate community. The participants have insufficient knowledge towards analgesic and antibiotics uses.
