ABSTRACT
The study assessed the hygienic practices of market traders in Egor Local Government Area of Edo state. The researcher was interested in finding out the factors that hinder market traders from performing hygienic practices in spite of its benefits to the market traders themselves and their respective communities. In doing this five research questions were raised to guide the study. A total sample of 120 market traders drawn through a stratified random technique was used for the study. The descriptive survey method was adopted for the research design and thus the data for the study were collected with the use of questionnaire. After experts, validated the instrument, it was pilot-tested for reliability. The reliability coefficient was determined using the Cronbach Alpha procedure and it came up to 0.67 which indicated a high degree of stability of the instrument. The data were analysed using simple count and simple percentages including a graphical depict of the socio-demographical data of the respondents.
The major findings of this study include the fact that hygienic practices among market traders has no properly implemented system of carrying out sanitary practices on their respective market spaces. With the knowledge of hygienic practices consumers and market traders will make notable changes in the way they have handled the siege of poor hygiene in the market places, homes, workplaces, schools and among others and inturn combating environmental issues such as: improper waste disposal, overwhelming solid waste, air pollution and among others. Furthermore, hygienic practices among market traders has thrived in other markets in Nigeria by creating policies and implementing them. Also enlightening market traders about how best to adhere to environmental sanitation practices.
