ABSTRACT
Fish is generally appreciated as one of the healthiest and cheapest source of protein but despite its valuable nutritional constituents, its ability to bioaccumulate toxic and non-biodegradable heavy metals in its edible body parts calls serious concerns. This study has shown variations among concentrations of heavy metal in the gill, liver and muscles of C. gariepinus and T. zilli, as iron had the highest level of bioaccumulation in the gills and muscle of the fishes. Also, Clarias gariepinus had more heavy metals concentration than T. zilli. All THQ values were under one, that mean that intakes of heavy metals by consuming these fish is not likely to cause any appreciable health risks on the human body. Human health risk associated with the consumption of the fish 103 species showed that that the consumption of C. gariepinus and T. zilli from Ikpoba reservoir do not pose any health risk to consumers.
