ASSESSMENT OF FOOD SECURITY STATUS OF URBAN POULTRY FARMING HOUSEHOLDS

ABSRTACT

The purpose of this research was to determine the level of food insecurity among families raising chickens in the cities of Egor and Ovia-North East in Edo state, Nigeria. The study's specific goals were to look at the demographics and income levels of urban poultry farmers in the area, find out how well fed the households that raised the chickens were, learn about the farmers' approaches to marketing and distributing their goods, and pinpoint any major roadblocks to their production. For this study, questionnaires and interviews were conducted with 119 local poultry farmers. The results showed that the vast majority of the farmers (66.4% in this sample) were male, that the vast majority (76.5% in this sample) were married, that the mean age of the respondents was 43 years old, and that only 29.4% of the respondents had completed grade school. In the research region, poultry farmers had an average monthly income of N65,826.30 from non-farm sources, and an average monthly revenue from farming activities of N77,739.77.
