Abstract

The use of contraceptive which is the major component of Family Planning (FP) is a key constituent of health services and it benefits the health and wellbeing of women, men, children and families and communities. This study assessed the knowledge, uptake and associated factors of family planning.

A total of 400 women of child bearing age (15-49) years attending clinic at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) participated in this cross sectional study. A systematic sampling technique was utilized and a sample size was calculated using the formula for simple proportion. A combination of quantitative (semi structured questionnaire) and qualitative data collection (FGD) methods was used to elicit information relevant to the study objective. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS version 20 statistical software. Descriptive frequency tables were used to respond the research questions while Chi-square was used to test the hypothesis. Data collection and analysis were carried out over a period of 20 weeks and approval for the study was obtained from ethical review committee of ISTH Irrua.

The findings of the study exposed that though the knowledge of family planning was high, utilization was low. Education and socio-economic status of the women did not affect their uptake of family planning. The study concluded that the high knowledge of family planning did not translate into utilization. It was recommended that the government should provide Reproductive Health Centres where family planning education would be given to women on the choice of family planning for both educated and non-educated women.
