ASSESSMENT OF CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND PRIMARY PUPILS PERFORMANCE IN OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to establish classroom management and primary pupils' performance in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. four research. What classroom management strategies are employed by teachers in primary and secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State? How do classroom management practices influence primary pupils' academic performance in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State? What are the socio-economic factors affecting primary pupils’ academic performance in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State? How do teacher training and professional development impact classroom management and pupil performance in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State?

The descriptive survey research design was used for this study. The population of the study comprised of one thousand six hundred and thirty-two students (1,632) in the twenty-nine (29) public secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample for the study consists of two hundred (200) students drawn from five (5) secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The simple random sampling technique was used in selecting the schools from the twenty-nine public secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

Findings from the study revealed that establishing an effective environment on the first day of class is one of the classroom management strategies that are employed by teachers in primary and secondary schools. It was revealed that teacher interaction with primary pupils regularly is also another classroom management strategies employed by teachers in primary and secondary schools. It was revealed that one of the most impactful classrooms manage strategies is the use of visualization from the study it was recommended that the school management should implement a comprehensive induction programme and strategies which should comprise multiple types of support, including high quality monitoring, common planning time, and continual support from school leaders. To minimize the rate of attrition among teachers, a concerted effort from all stakeholders in the education system is required.
