ASSESSMENT OF BIOLOGY TEACHERS' METHODS USED AND STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN BIOLOGY IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE.

ABSTRACT

The study assessed the methods of teaching used by biology teachers in secondary schools and students' academic performance in biology. Four research questions were raised and analyzed for the purpose of this study. Random Sampling Technique was used to select 50 students in 5 different  senior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. These schools included rural schools, urban schools, private schools, public schools, single-sex and mixed schools ( All  are Senior Secondary Schools). The result showed that most secondary schools make use of different teaching methods, with some being used regularly, compared to the others. The result showed that lecture method, is the most used method of teaching biology in senior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, while field trip method is the least used method of teaching biology.  Based on the results, it was recommended that students should be taught with appropriate methods for teaching biology, like the laboratory, project and field trip method, which are learner centered methods of teaching. Teachers should have a well prepared lesson plan to effectively teach students, both private and public schools should hire qualified teachers who can effectively teach students, using the right teaching methods, schools should provide adequate  laboratory equipments for effective teaching of biology.
