ABSTRACT
Andrographis paniculata, commonly referred to as the 'King of bitters,' is a valuable medicinal plant cultivated in Southeast Asia and various tropical regions worldwide. It contains a variety of bioactive compounds, such as monoterpenoids, ent-labdane diterpenoids, flavonoids, quinic acids, and xanthones. Among these compounds, andrographolide and its derivatives, which are extracted from Andrographis paniculata, exhibit a wide range of pharmacological effects, including antiinflammatory, antimalarial, antidiabetic, antileukemia, and anticancer properties. This study investigates the impact of aqueous extracts of Andrographis paniculata on various biochemical parameters in Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Diabetes is known to affect liver function, as well as serum markers. In this research, we assessed the levels of total bilirubin, unconjugated bilirubin, conjugated bilirubin, albumin, malondialdehyde (MDA), and the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in the liver, and serum of STZ-induced rats treated with Andrographis paniculata extracts.
