ABSTRACT
The research was carried out to evaluate the bacteriological contamination of water tanks in University of Benin, Benin city. Standard bacteriological methods were used to determine the total bacterial count using pour plate methods after serial dilution. The bacterial isolates were characterized and identified using morphological and biochemical methods. The percentage distribution and frequency of isolation of the isolates were evaluated using statistical method. From the result obtained in this study, the total heterotrophic bacterial counts ranged from 2.90 log10 cfu/ml to 3.35 log10 cfu/ml, while the coliform ranged from 2.00 to 2.92 log10 cfu/ml. Using the cultural, morphological and biochemical test, the isolates obtained in this study were Escherichia coli, Klebsiella sp, Staphylococcus sp, Bacillus sp, Citrobacter and Enterobacter sp. From the result, isolates were resistant to many of the antibiotics including, septrin, erytromycin and tetracycline. The study revealed that bacterial loads of total coliforms and faecal coliforms were detected in water samples analyzed after storage, where increased numbers of coliforms were observed. The positive results related to total coliforms and faecal coliforms might be due to both leakage and contamination in the distribution system or inadequate treatment.
