ABSTRACT
Glaucoma is a chronic disease which remains the leading cause of irreversible blindness globally. It can be managed with the use of appropriate medication therapy and regular follow up. For the medication to be effective there has to be strict adherence to the drug regimen. However, this is not the case for many glaucomatous patients and the reasons for this have to be known in order to be able to modify and correct them thereby improving their quality of life. This study aimed to assess the level of adherence to anti-glaucoma drugs among glaucoma patients in Benin Metropolis. A clinic based cross-sectional sectional study was conducted in Ikpoba Okha, Oredo and Egor Local Government Areas for duration of 2 months with a sample size of 210. The Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS -8) was used to assess the adherence to anti-glaucoma drugs among 210 patients with glaucoma using a purposive sampling 12 technique in selected clinics in Benin; the questionnaire was pretested on a similar study group to assess its efficacy. The data collected was analyzed using ordinal regression model and results showed that 118(56.19%) participants had low adherence, 71(33.81%) participants had medium adherence and only 21(10.00%) participants had high adherence. Statistical analysis revealed that age (p=0.01), marital status (p=0.018), and educational status (p=0.02) were significant predictor of adherence to anti-glaucoma drugs among glaucoma patients. This study contributed to eye care practice by identifying factors that lead to poor and non adherence to glaucoma medications by glaucoma patients and some ways to mitigate these factors were also discussed.
