ABSTRACT
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing problem in the 21st century and one of the most serious jeopardies to global public health. The number of resistant microbial strains, geographic areas affected by drug resistance, and the extent of resistance in each organism are escalating. This experiment was carried out at the laboratory of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Life Science, University of Benin. With the aid of a sterile swap stick, different isolate were collected from the laboratory of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. The isolate obtained from the laboratory of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital was immediately transported to the laboratory for definitive identification. The sterile swap stick containing the isolate were streak on a prepared sterile nutrient agar plate and incubated for 18 hours. After incubation period, growth was observed and were then subjected for Gram stain and Biochemical test. The turbid solution of 0.5 McFarland standard formed was transferred into a test tube for comparison with bacterial inoculums suspension and Kirby-bauer disc diffusion technique was used to determine the antibacterial activity of isolated bacteria. 20ml of Mueller Hinton agar plates were prepared following manufacturer’s instructions. 1ml aliquot of each test organism suspension (standardized) was transferred onto the well dried Mueller Hinton agar plates and was spread evenly following slow rotation of the plates and excess was decanted. The plates were allowed to dry, with the aid of sterile forcep, antibiotic disc (erythromycin, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, ceftazidime, , amoxicillin) were impregnated in the well dried Mueller Hinton agar plates. The result of the study showed that, among the isolate, Escherichia coli was found to be resistant to ceftriaxone and ceftazidime, whereas susceptible to Ciprofloxacin.
