ASSESSING THE SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF SPEED BUMPS ON SOME SELECTED UNIVERSITY OF BENIN ROADS USING GEOSPATIAL TECHNIQUES

ABSTRACT

Speed bumps serve as effective traffic calming measures, empowering transportation authorities to regulate vehicle speeds and enhance safety in specific areas. While commonly employed in residential zones, their utilization has expanded to higher-volume roadways, particularly in developing countries. This widespread adoption is attributed to their costeffectiveness and straightforward installation process. Nevertheless, in this study area, a lack of proper technical guidance for speed bump design and implementation exists. This study assessed and compared the existing speed bumps within the University of Benin with the standards, and employed geospatial technique to map the speed bumps. In assessing and comparing the existing speed bumps with the standards, physical measurements of the speed bumps in the study area were taken and the coordinates of the speed bumps were obtained through point positioning method, using mobile GNSS app and plotted on a geo-referenced map of the study area using ArcGIS software. Out of the entire 28 speed bumps that were assessed, only 18 of them (64.29%) met the required 300mm-1000mm standard for length, and the 75mm-100mm requirement for height. While none of these speed bumps are in tandem with the standard for spacing between intersections, only 5 of them (23.81%) fall between the required range of 60000mm - 120000mm for spacing between bumps. 24 speed bumps (85.71%) were made of asphalt, 4 were of concrete (14.29%), 23 were in good condition (82.14%) and 5 were partially destroyed (17.86%). This study revealed the inconsistencies in the geometric parameters of the speed bumps within the university environment and nonconformity with known standards. The created geo-referenced map serves as a valuable resource for university cab/shuttle drivers and visitors, providing 6 insights into locations where speed bumps are present and advising caution, particularly due to limited traffic signage.
