SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

This study examines the impacts of students’ population on the hostel accommodation of students in the University of Benin. The main objective of this study was to assess the physical environment and infrastructural challenges of students in their hostel accommodations. It was geared towards establishing facts that students population growth has led to the pressure on the existing hostel accommodations in the University of Benin and this trend has further led to the general breakdown of the hostel accommodations facilities. This study reveals that:

  • The state of the hostel accommodation is greatly affected by the student population growth in the hostel accommodations.
  • The population pressure on the hostel facilities is not a major factor that affect academic performance of students.
  • In the University hostel, there is a general breakdown of facilities although; in the privately owned hostel accommodation the opposite was the case.
  •  The study confirms poor maintenance by the management of the hostel structures which continues to deteriorate. However, the study further contrasted other study which argues that it is more beneficial for the students to live in the hostels within the campuses since it motivates them to read and improve their academic performance.
