ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON ADOLESCENT REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH BEHAVIOR IN BENIN METROPOLIS

ABSTRACT

This study examines the impact of social media on adolescent reproductive health behavior in Benin metropolis. The primary data were collected from of 400 junior secondary student’s class 2 and senior secondary school (2) students in four public secondary schools in Benin metropolis of Edo State. 140 respondents were selected using Simple Random Sampling technique, Four research questions were raised to guild the study. The instrument was validated by 3 experts from the Department of Adult and NonFormal Education, Faculty of Education. The data collected was organized into frequency tables and they were analyzed using percentages. The findings suggest that social media plays a significant role in shaping adolescents' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding reproductive health in Benin Metropolis This Study recommended that, Implement media literacy programmes targeted at adolescents to enhance their ability to critically evaluate information on social media platforms. Utilize peer education initiatives to promote accurate information and positive attitudes towards reproductive health among adolescents on social media. Collaborate with social media platforms, educators, healthcare professionals, and policymakers to develop guidelines and strategies for promoting accurate and reliable reproductive health information on social media. Engage parents, guardians, and community leaders in discussions about the role of social media in shaping adolescents' reproductive health attitudes and behaviors, emphasizing the importance of monitoring and guiding adolescents' online activities. Conduct further research to assess the evolving landscape of social media use and its impact on adolescents' reproductive health, and regularly monitor trends and perceptions to inform targeted interventions and policies.
